Editorial Review for McIntosh's Steak & Seafood – by Geoff Lutton
The Scene
McIntosh's is simple and elegant. Mustardy beige walls are adorned with oil paintings; the carpet is plush; oversized promotional wine bottles serve as decoration. Though the small size leads to intimate dining, it also leads to cigar-smoke overflow from the bar--where most businessmen seem to retire after their meal. Though the official dress code is business casual, most diners are dressed like the power brokers they are.
The Food
The a la carte menu features steaks, chops, seafood and one lone chicken dish. All the beef is aged and served in thick, flavorful cuts on a plain off-white plate. Classic steakhouse sides likes scalloped potatoes and creamed spinach come in a similarly plain boat-like dish. There's enough seafood on the menu--everything from lobster to sea bass--to keep non-beef eaters satisfied.

I love a good steak. I love a good steak au poivre. The steak au poivre I had here was not what I would call a good steak. I asked for Medium and got well done. The shrimp cocktail we ordered tasted like rubber and had a funky aftertaste. (Of course...why I ordered Shrimp cocktail in Charlotte, NC...I don't really know!) My husband's oysters rockefeller was fantastic though! My martini was also fabulous! We should have just hung out in the bar. However- one last thing...the next day I came down with a terrible of the stomach flu. Maybe the rubber shrimp? Alas, I will never know. But next time I think we will just head over to Ruth's Chris or Sullivans. Cheers!
Pros: Very nice bar and ambiance...my husband enjoyed his food!
Cons: steak and shrimp were a bit disappointing.

This was my 3rd trip to McIntosh's restaurant. The first 2 times I had the Chilean Sea Bass which was awesome both times. But last night I finally tried the filet.... 13oz. It was overcooked, dry as a bone, and had that charred outside taste..and I ordered it medium rare!!!!! Oddly enough, the scallop potatos I got on the side were overcooked too... the cheese was bard as a rock and dark. If this is the standard, go to Del Friscos if you want a solid filet; theirs kills the one I had last night. I'm used to cutting into a medium rare filet and seeing reddish color and having plenty of juice seep out onto the plate. Not this time. I'll give them one more shot though because my other dining experences there were good.
Pros: Great atmosphere and service
Cons: Overcooked, dry filet mignon on my last visit, overcooked potatos on the side
